How to prepare a return for a deceased?

To prepare a final return with TaxChopper:

  1. Click "Interview Setup" under "Start Point" or under "Account & Personal" on the left.

  2. Tick the box "Newcomer, Deceased or Emigrant" on the right and click Next.

  3. On the next page, select the 2nd option and enter the date of death.
Note: If the deceased has a surviving spouse, you can still prepare two returns coupled together. To do so:
  1. At the "Basic Information" page of the deceased, the marital status should be married/common-law (on the date of death, or tax year end), also answer "No" to the question "Was your marital status changed?".

  2. At the "Basic Information" page of the surviving spouse, select Widowed as marital status at end of tax year, answer "Yes" to the question "Was your marital status changed?".

Note: NETFILE does not accept final returns. You need to Paper file the return. How to file a PAPER return?
